Frequently asked questions
What is the ideal meta description length?
Around 155 characters, or about 920 pixels. Google truncates on width rather than character count, so the safe range shifts with the letters you use. Under 70 characters you usually leave room unused that a competitor will fill.
How long should a meta title be?
50 to 60 characters, roughly 600 pixels on desktop. Put the term you are targeting near the front: if the tail gets cut, you want the cut to fall on the brand name, not on the subject.
Why does Google rewrite my meta description?
Because it prefers a passage from the page that matches the query wording. It happens on most queries. The description you write is still what appears when it does match, and it remains the snippet used by most social and chat previews.
Does a missing meta description hurt rankings?
It is not a ranking factor, so nothing drops. But Google then picks the passage itself, and its pick is rarely the one you would have chosen. Writing the description is how you keep control of the sentence that decides the click.
