What is keyword density?

Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears in your content compared to the total word count. A healthy keyword density is typically between 1-3% for your primary keyword. Going above 3% can signal keyword stuffing to search engines, while going below 0.5% may mean you're not emphasizing your target keyword enough.

Why analyze keyword density?

Avoid keyword stuffing

Google penalizes pages that unnaturally repeat keywords. Check your density to stay within safe limits.

Discover n-gram patterns

See which 2 and 3-word phrases appear most often. Great for identifying your content's topical focus.

Optimize for SEO

Ensure your target keywords appear with sufficient frequency without over-optimization.

Content quality check

Identify repetitive phrases that make your content feel redundant and reduce readability.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good keyword density?

There is no target Google rewards. The useful range in practice is roughly 0.5% to 2.5% for a main term — not because that number ranks, but because anything above it starts reading as unnatural to a human. Density is a diagnostic for over-optimisation, not a lever to push.

Does keyword density still matter for SEO?

Not as a ranking factor. Google has used semantic models for years and judges relevance from meaning, synonyms and context rather than repetition counts. Density still matters in one direction: too high triggers a spam signal. Nobody has ever ranked by hitting a percentage.

What counts as keyword stuffing?

Repeating a term so often that the sentence stops serving the reader — lists of cities, the same phrase forced into every paragraph, text hidden for crawlers. Google names it explicitly in its spam policies and it can cost a manual action. If a paragraph reads badly out loud, the checker will usually confirm why.

What are n-grams and why check them?

An n-gram is a sequence of n consecutive words: "keyword" is a 1-gram, "keyword density" a 2-gram. Checking 2- and 3-grams shows the phrases you actually repeat, which single-word density hides. It is often where an unintended pattern shows up.
